Our Story

Never Forget

'the place Where Our Big Dreams Began'

For many years, Lewin Carter and Radcliffe Allen (aka Cliffe) have discussed a reunion of the Ferncourt High School Past Students from the Class of 1987. Year after year, nothing happened. Then, in late January 2023 (January 21 at 8:34 PM, to be exact), Lewin stepped up to the plate by creating a WhatsApp chat group called ‘Ferncourt Fellas’ and added Cliffe to the group. Finally, they were on their way to realizing their dream.

Then came the million-dollar question, ‘how do we grow the group’? Simple, first they added Mark Harvey, then Al (Slim) Findlay, then Michael Brown, and then the man himself, Maurice (Tucky) Wilson. Things were shaping up toward a powerhouse chat group. These were the only names in the group for a while, but they were all men. Then, a few of the ‘Ferncourt Fellas’ mentioned that they should remember to include some ladies while growing the group. So, Donnette Kelly became the first lady added; over time, the group continued to grow with both men and ladies from Canada, the USA, and back home in Jamaica. Oh, one important thing to mention; before the ladies started to join the group, they had to change the name to ‘Ferncourt Linkup! Class of 87’.

The Ferncourt Linkup! WhatsApp group is all about building the foundation for a community of past students who started their high school career in Claremont St. Ann, Jamaica, approximately 40 years ago. While this was an awfully long time ago, today’s technology has allowed long-lost colleagues to come together and share memories from whatever city, country, or continent we live in.

While the Ferncourt Linkup! WhatsApp group is a community dedicated to the class of 1987; the goal of Ferncourtlynkup.com is to expand the reach of our community to all Ferncourt High School past students. With ferncourtlynkup.com, past students can ‘linkup’ online to support each other, share experiences, seek brotherly and sisterly advice, and collaborate on ideas for giving back to the school where all our ‘big dreams’ began.

One way the class of 1987 plans to give back this year is by raising funds for the school. As such, this site is dedicated to selling merchandise, where all profits will be donated to Ferncourt. While the site currently offers only hoodies and sweatpants, the plan is to roll out other merchandise as we continue to build out the future of our Ferncourt family LinkingUp online.

'How Ferncourt Prepared Us For Our Future'

Ferncourt provided us with numerous opportunities to develop our communication skills, both oral and written. Writing research papers, participating in class discussions, and making presentations helped each of us to become a more effective communicator. This skill has been critical in our post-high school lives, where we have had to collaborate with others, make presentations, and convey our ideas effectively, in order to excel at our job.

Time Management

When we attended Ferncourt, we were expected to balance our academic work with extracurricular activities, socializing, and even part-time jobs. Managing our time was crucial to ensuring that we met our educational goals while still having time for the other aspects of our lives. We learned to prioritize our tasks, develop proper study habits, and set deadlines for ourselves. These skills have proven invaluable in our post-high school life, where we have had to juggle multiple responsibilities and competing priorities.

Critical Thinking

The subjects we took at Ferncourt, particularly in our senior years, required us to think critically and analyze information from various sources to form our own opinions. This skill has been extremely beneficial in our professional careers, where we must make sound judgments and decisions based on the available data. Critical thinking has also been helpful in our personal lives, where we continuously need to evaluate information from various sources to make life-altering decisions.

A Storied past of Our Alma Mater

Since 1938

Ferncourt High School, located in the town of Claremont, Jamaica, is a well-known institution that has played an integral role in the development of education in Jamaica. Established in 1938, the school has come a long way since its inception, and its history is a fascinating one.

Ferncourt High School was initially established as a community school, catering to the needs of the surrounding areas. It was a small institution with only a handful of teachers and students, but its vision was to provide high-quality education to the children of Claremont and its neighboring areas.

In its early years, Ferncourt High School faced many challenges, including a lack of proper infrastructure, limited resources, and a shortage of qualified teachers. Despite these obstacles, the school remained steadfast in its commitment to providing quality education to its students.

Over the years, Ferncourt High School grew in size and stature. In the 1980s, the school was expanded with the construction of additional classrooms, labs, and administrative buildings. This expansion allowed the school to accommodate more students and provide a wider range of courses.

The school’s academic standards continued to rise, and in the 1990s, Ferncourt High School became one of the most prestigious schools in Jamaica. Its students consistently performed well in national exams, and many went on to pursue higher education at top universities in Jamaica and abroad.

Today, Ferncourt High School continues to maintain its reputation as a top-performing institution. It has a highly qualified faculty, state-of-the-art facilities, and a comprehensive curriculum that prepares students for success in their chosen fields. The school offers a wide range of courses, including the sciences, arts, and vocational studies, as well as extracurricular activities such as sports and music.

Ferncourt High School’s history is one of perseverance, dedication, and success. The school has come a long way since its humble beginnings as a private institution with curricula covering French, Latin, music, and decorum.  Its growth is a testament to the hard work and commitment of its faculty, staff, and students. Today, Ferncourt High School remains a shining example of what can be achieved through a commitment to excellence in education.
